The Rolfe Library Gets New Museum Display

We packed up the display, "The Youngest Among Us," that was at the Pocahontas Library and moved it to the Rolfe Library. The case there is a bit smaller, so we had to pick just the best items to display.

A book chronicling the birth of babies at the Hovenden Hospital in Laurens from May 1947 to May 1948 is sitting on the top shelf open to a page with a cute Rolfe baby. Does anyone remember that hospital? My husband was born there in October 1948, so he's not in the book.

Here's the scoop on the hospital. Dr. J.H. Hovenden practiced medicine in Laurens for over 40 years. After he died in 1945 his widow, Jennie, gave their home to the town of Laurens to be used as a hospital. It operated for a few years,  but it was not a financial success and the property was given to the Good Samaritans to operate as a nursing home.

If you'd like to read some more about the display check out the October 12th  entry on this blog. Or better yet, check out the display at the library and check out a book while you're at it.
