Wiegert Farm School Days

fifth graders sampling rye bread, homemade butter and rhubarb jam

On May 4, over 130 fifth graders from Pocahontas County gathered at the Wiegert Farm for the annual School Days event. In addition to a visit to the one- room school, the farmhouse and the farmstead, the students participated in outdoor activities at Cooper's Cove Park. The day was sponsored by the Wiegert Farm Committee, a group composed of members from the Pocahontas County Conservation Board and the Pocahontas County Historical Society.

As  volunteers from the museum, we took charge of the farmhouse. In the kitchen, the fifth-graders learned how the Wiegerts raised and preserved their food. The kids nibbled on samples of fresh, dried and baked goods of the time. In the parlor, they viewed some odd and interesting artifacts of the time and tried their best to decide how they were used.
